[Preposition] + el/la/los/las + que (Part 2): The Rarer 10%

Optional depth for advanced learners – the remaining prepositions and compound forms that make up the other ~10% of usage.

Why Part 2 Exists

In Part 1, we covered the six core prepositions – a, de, en, con, por, para – which make up roughly 90% of everyday usage of this chunk family.

This post covers the remaining ~10%. These are optional depth: you don't need them to speak fluent Spanish, but they appear in formal writing, news, literature, and precise conversation.

📘 If you haven't read Part 1 yet: start there first. The six core prepositions (a, de, en, con, por, para) are the ones you'll use every single day.

The Extended Set (~10% of Usage)

These prepositions follow the exact same pattern: [Preposition] + el/la/los/las + que. The article agrees in gender and number with the noun the chunk refers back to.

💡 No new contractions: Only a and de contract with el (giving al and del). All other prepositions – including everything in this table – sit unchanged in front of el que.

Compound Prepositions

Compound prepositions (multi-word prepositions) also work with this chunk family. The pattern is the same, with the article matching the noun:

  • a través del que — through which
  • cerca del que — near which
  • lejos del que — far from which
  • dentro del que — inside which
  • fuera del que — outside which
  • encima del que — on top of which
  • debajo del que — beneath which
  • alrededor del que — around which
  • delante del que — in front of which
  • detrás del que — behind which
  • frente al que — facing which
  • junto al que — next to which

All of these follow the del/de la/de los/de las or al/a la/a los/a las pattern, depending on the final preposition in the compound.

Examples: Extended Prepositions

With sin (without)

  • Es un problema sin el que podríamos vivir. — It's a problem we could live without.
  • No conozco la razón sin la que nada funciona. — I don't know the reason without which nothing works.

With sobre (on / about)

  • El tema sobre el que discutimos es serio. — The topic we discussed is serious.
  • La mesa sobre la que está el libro es antigua. — The table on which the book is (sitting) is old.

With desde (from / since)

  • La ventana desde la que miraba era pequeña. — The window from which she looked was small.
  • El punto desde el que partimos está lejos. — The point from which we started is far.

With hasta (until / up to)

  • El límite hasta el que podemos llegar es claro. — The limit up to which we can go is clear.
  • La fecha hasta la que esperamos es mañana. — The date until which we wait is tomorrow.

With entre (between / among)

  • Los libros entre los que elegí eran todos buenos. — The books among which I chose were all good.
  • Las opciones entre las que dudamos son dos. — The options we hesitate between are two.

With durante (during)

  • El período durante el que trabajamos fue corto. — The period during which we worked was short.
  • La época durante la que vivió fue difícil. — The era during which he lived was difficult.

With frente a (compound – facing)

  • La casa frente a la que vivimos es roja. — The house facing (across from) ours is red.
  • El problema frente al que estamos es grave. — The problem we're facing is serious.

With a través de (compound – through)

  • El túnel a través del que pasamos era largo. — The tunnel through which we passed was long.
  • Las puertas a través de las que entramos estaban abiertas. — The doors through which we entered were open.

⚠️ Prepositions That Prefer el cual

Two prepositions strongly prefer the el/la/los/las cual(es) chunk instead of el que:

según (according to) → el plan según el cual actuamos — the plan according to which we act

mediante (by means of) → el método mediante el cual funciona — the method by which it works

Both según el que and mediante el que are technically possible, but they sound unnatural. Stick with el cual for these two. We'll cover el cual in a future post.

🧠 Memory Tricks for the Extended Set

  • 🔵 Same pattern, new prepositions
    Nothing changes structurally. If you know al que, you already know sin el que, sobre el que, desde el que.
  • 🟡 Only a + el and de + el contract
    All the other extended prepositions sit unchanged: sobre el que, not sobrel que. No new contractions to learn.
  • 🟢 Compounds work the same
    If a compound ends in de or a, it can still contract with el: a través del que, frente al que.
  • 🔴 según / mediante → el cual
    Two exceptions. When you see these two prepositions, switch to el cual instead.
