Why Hablar Needs Frames
Hablar is simple on its own, but the words around it do the real work. Con picks the listener, de picks the topic, and a handful of fixed phrases handle subject changes, refusals, and signs. Learn them as chunks and conversation gets easier.
Pattern 1: Hablar con — "To talk to"
Use con for the person you speak with. It is also how you ask for someone on the phone.
- Necesito hablar con mi jefe. — I need to talk to my boss.
- ¿Puedo hablar con Ana? — May I speak to Ana?
- Hablamos luego. — Talk to you later.
Chunk to learn:
Hablar con + [person]
Pattern 2: Hablar de — "To talk about"
Use de for the topic. It pairs naturally with [De qué] Chunks.
- Hablamos de política. — We talked about politics.
- ¿De qué hablas? — What are you talking about?
- No quiero hablar de eso. — I don't want to talk about that.
Chunk to learn:
Hablar de + [topic]
Pattern 3: Hablando de — "Speaking of"
The smooth way to move the conversation to a related topic.
- Hablando de comida, ¿tienes hambre? — Speaking of food, are you hungry?
- Hablando de Pedro, ¿lo has visto? — Speaking of Pedro, have you seen him?
- Hablando de eso… — Speaking of which…
Chunk to learn:
Hablando de + [topic], + [new point]
Pattern 4: ¡Ni hablar! — "No way!"
A firm, informal refusal. Literally not even talk, it means the idea is out of the question.
- —¿Prestarle mi coche? ¡Ni hablar! — "Lend him my car? No way!"
- Ni hablar, no pienso ir. — Out of the question, I'm not going.
- —¿Vienes? —¡Ni hablar! — "Are you coming?" "Not a chance!"
Chunk to learn:
¡Ni hablar!
Pattern 5: Se habla — "…is spoken"
The impersonal se describes which language is used where. You will see it on shop signs.
- Aquí se habla español. — Spanish is spoken here.
- ¿Se habla inglés aquí? — Is English spoken here?
- En Brasil se habla portugués. — In Brazil they speak Portuguese.
Chunk to learn:
Se habla + [language]
Pattern 6: Hablar en serio / claro — Speaking plainly
Use these when you want to be direct or check that someone is not joking.
- Hablemos claro. — Let's speak plainly.
- ¿Hablas en serio? — Are you serious?
- Te hablo en serio. — I'm being serious with you.
Chunk to learn:
Hablar en serio / claro
Talk Like a Speaker
Frames for people, topics, transitions, refusals, signs, and honesty make up most of what you need around this verb. For its close relative, see [Decir] Chunks.
Start with hablando de and ¡ni hablar!. You will use both the next time you speak Spanish.
This post is part of the Spanish Chunk Series — a growing collection of chunk patterns for natural Spanish.
