Why Encontrar Needs Frames
Encontrar means to find, but encontrarse can mean to meet, to feel, or to be located. Context and the words around it decide which meaning you need. Learn the patterns as chunks and you will stop guessing.
Pattern 1: Encontrar + object — "To find"
The basic sense: discovering or locating something you were looking for or came across.
- No encuentro mis llaves. — I can't find my keys.
- ¿Has encontrado trabajo? — Have you found a job?
- Encontré un buen restaurante. — I found a good restaurant.
Chunk to learn:
No encuentro + [object]
Pattern 2: Encontrarse con — "To run into / to meet"
With con, the reflexive form describes meeting someone, often by chance, or facing a situation.
- Me encontré con un viejo amigo. — I ran into an old friend.
- ¿Nos encontramos a las ocho? — Shall we meet at eight?
- Me encontré con muchos problemas. — I ran into a lot of problems.
Chunk to learn:
Encontrarse con + [person / problem]
Pattern 3: Me encuentro + adjective — "I am / I feel"
A slightly more formal way to talk about how you are. It is common in polite conversation and on the phone. Compare with [Sentir] Chunks.
- Me encuentro bien. — I'm doing well.
- ¿Cómo te encuentras? — How are you feeling?
- Hoy se encuentra mal. — He's feeling unwell today.
Chunk to learn:
Me encuentro + bien / mal / [adjective]
Pattern 4: Encuentro que — "I find that"
Another way to give a considered opinion, a bit more formal than creo que. See [Creer] Chunks.
- Encuentro que es demasiado caro. — I find it too expensive.
- Encuentro que tienes razón. — I find that you're right.
- ¿No encuentras que hace calor? — Don't you find it hot?
Chunk to learn:
Encuentro que + [indicative]
Pattern 5: Se encuentra — "It is located"
A formal way to say where something is. Common in directions, guides, and announcements.
- El museo se encuentra en el centro. — The museum is in the center.
- El baño se encuentra al fondo. — The restroom is at the back.
- Se encuentran en la segunda planta. — They are on the second floor.
Chunk to learn:
Se encuentra(n) + [place]
Pattern 6: Encontrar tiempo / una solución — Finding abstract things
Time, ways, and solutions are all things Spanish speakers find.
- No encuentro tiempo para leer. — I can't find time to read.
- Encontré la forma de hacerlo. — I found a way to do it.
- Hay que encontrar una solución. — We have to find a solution.
Chunk to learn:
Encontrar tiempo / la forma / una solución
Find the Frame
Objects, meetings, states, opinions, locations, and abstract solutions all run through one verb. The reflexive pronoun is your cue to switch meaning.
Start with no encuentro… and me encontré con…. You will use both the next time you speak Spanish.
